The project “Break The Lines” presents ephemeral structures made of light and placed in nature. It brings the natural chaos of real world and some abstract and seemingly virtual shapes face to face.
Le projet « Break The Lines » présente des structures lumineuses éphémères dans la nature et confronte le chaos naturel du réel à des formes strictes et abstraites à la limite du virtuel.

EN : Nowadays on the Internet, one can find a lot of illustrations that show geometrical shapes on a natural background. I am quite fond of those images. I like the contrast between the starkness of a specific form and the chaos of wild world, like a triangle drawn over the photograph of a forest. It works everytime. Most of the time, those images are the result of digital photo retouches.
FR : De nos jours, sur internet, on peut trouver de nombreuses illustrations présentant des formes géométriques dans la nature. J’aime beaucoup ce genre d’image : le contraste entre la sévérité d’une forme définie et le chaos du monde sauvage. Un triangle par dessus une photo de forêt. Ça marche à tous les coups. Ces images sont souvent le résultat d’une retouche informatique…
To carry on with my reflection upon real and virtual, upon the making of an image and upon all creative process in an era dominated by digital technology, I too felt like creating a photo series of the same kind as the ones aforementioned, but without using my computer. I felt like creating a geometrical shape “in real life”, and take a picture of the whole scene in one go. These images, beyond their aesthetic qualities, shall have the audience ask themselves : is it a special effect ?
Pour continuer ma réflexion sur le réel et le virtuel, la fabrication d’une image et le processus créatif à l’ère du numérique, j’avais envie moi aussi de créer une série photo de ce type, mais en me passant de l’outil informatique. Créer la forme “pour de vrai” et la photographier. Ces images, au-delà de leurs qualités esthétiques, devront amener le spectateur à se poser la question suivante : est-ce que c’est un trucage ?
As a consequence, I thought about setting up some light installation in the forest and in the mountains, using lasers. I would use small mirrors in order to sculpt the light rays. At first sight, the idea seemed quite easy to realise. But in practice, the lasers sold to the general public are of very low power, and their rays can only be seen in a particles saturated atmosphere (either smoky, cloudy or snowy), and with a low light.
J’ai donc pensé à faire des installations lumineuses dans la forêt à l’aide de lasers, et à sculpter la lumière en la faisant se réfléchir sur de petits miroirs. A première vue l’idée me semblait assez facile à mettre en oeuvre. Mais en pratique, les lasers en vente légalement ont une très faible puissance, et on ne peut les voir que dans une atmosphère chargée de particules (neige, brouillard, fumée) et par très faible luminosité…
Therefore, in order take pictures of the laser rays, I had to do the photo shootings during the night. As for the video, since more light was needed, the shooting had to take place at dusk, which gave me a time gap of barely fifteen minutes per day.
Pour voir le laser il faudra donc prendre la photo de nuit. Pour la vidéo, comme on a besoin de plus de lumière, nous filmerons à la tombée de la nuit, entre chien et loup, ce qui nous donne une plage horaire de 15 minutes par jour.
At the beginning, I tried to content myself with the fog. However, it turned out the Alps were a lot less foggy than I had hoped. I waited for rough weather in order to go cloud-chasing in the mountains, but the clouds would always get away while I was setting my equipment up. I thought about using a hazer, but then, a generator would have been necessary ; either that, or a portable hazer, which is a very expensive piece of equipment. I then considered other means, such as mixing distilled water with glycerin and heat the liquid with a bee smoker. As nothing was really convincing, I had to make do with civilian smoke grenades, with all the randomness using such a tool implies. I even had to light up a campfire for additionnal smoke on some of the images.
Au début j’ai voulu utiliser uniquement le brouillard. Cependant il y a très peu de brume dans les Alpes. Par mauvais temps j’ai essayé de courir après les nuages, mais le temps de faire l’installation, le nuage était parti. J’aurais pu utiliser une machine à fumée, mais il fallait travailler en pleine nature, donc un groupe électrogène était nécessaire, ou une machine à fumée portative très onéreuse. J’ai envisagé toutes les possibilités pour faire de la fumée: faire chauffer de la glycérine et de l’eau distillée au soufflet d’apiculteur … Mais rien n’était convaincant. J’ai donc opté pour des fumigènes, avec tout le caractère aléatoire que cette technique implique. Certaines images ont même dû être faites à l’aide d’un feu de camp.
Obviously, had I had a bigger budget, the project would have been easier to implement. But then, it would have lost its appeal. The objective was to get along without much, for the best possible result, while staying in a D.I.Y spirit that is important to me.
Bien sûr, avec de gros moyens, le projet n’aurait pas été très difficile à mettre en oeuvre. Mais l’intérêt n’est pas là. Le but, c’est de se débrouiller avec peu pour avoir le meilleur résultat possible, et de rester dans un esprit Do It Yourself qui m’est cher.
At a time when computer generating images have never been easier to create, I think I have, after 5 years spent studying CGIs and infographics, all the skills I need to make any kind of numeric images. Now that I have all those technical means to express myself, I am wondering : Why do I create ? What is the use of it, and what can it bring to others and to myself ?
A l’heure où il est si facile de créer sur son ordinateur, je pense aujourd’hui avoir, après 5 années d’études en infographie et en images de syntèse, les compétences pour fabriquer n’importe quelle image. Maintenant que j’ai en ma possession tous les moyens techniques pour m’exprimer, je me pose la question de pourquoi créer, à quoi ça sert, et qu’est ce que cela peut apporter aux autres, et à moi même.
The project “Break The Lines” is not meant to change the world, but to give a prod to my everyday life. Today, I find little pleasure in the making of a numeric image with my computer : all I can do is staying sit on my chair and click. When I make my project in real life, I expose myself to chance, to nature. I have burnt my hair, I roamed the mountains and ran after the clouds, I cut myself, I spent with my friends (François, Loïc, Rémi, Yann : thank you) long hours outside, waiting for dusk, waiting for that perfect moment, staring at the moon and the clouds and studying their celestial movements and how they dyed the night ; waiting together, and talking about life.
Le projet « Break the lines » n’a pas pour vocation de changer le monde, mais bien de bousculer mon quotidien. Aujourd’hui, j’estime que fabriquer une image sur mon ordinateur ne m’apporte que très peu de plaisir. En faisant mon projet dans le monde réel, je me confronte au hasard, à la nature. Je me suis brûlé les cheveux, je me suis promené et j’ai couru après les nuages, je me suis coupé, j’ai passé avec mes amis (merci à François, Loic, Rémi, Yann) de longues heures à attendre la tombée de la nuit, le moment parfait, à scruter le mouvement de la lune, celui des nuages, la couleur de la nuit, et à parler de la vie.
